Armadillos burrow for protection and dig for food, creating visible damage to landscapes as their keen sense of smell leads them to feed mostly on insects often dug up in ornamental landscapes. Their underground tunnels measure 7 or 8 inches in diameter and can run up to 15 feet long, damaging adjacent plants and endangering your safety when crossing softened, collapsible surface soils.

Armadillos burrow along structures, foundations, driveways, fence lines, rock piles, stumps and brush piles, but most armadillo damage is caused by their feeding habits at night as they dig shallow holes, 1-3 inches deep and 3-5 inches long, in search of soil invertebrates. They will also dig deep holes where they will stay during the day before reappearing at night to begin their food search.
